This past week the Jehovah's Witnesses have been canvassing the neighborhoods in which I live and work. I really don't know that much about them and decided to do some research. I also decided to research the Seventh Day Adventists, since I know even less about them.
Both were founded in America. JW in Pennsylvania in 1870. 7DA has roots in upstate New York in the 1840's but wasn't officially organized until 1863 in Michigan. Both claim to be a restoration to an earlier, pure, and undiluted form of religion. 7DA claim a prophetess. Both have health codes. Both have congregations in countries all around the world. Each church's membership outside America exceeded the membership within America very early in their histories. Recent membership totals for JW is 19 million. Recent membership totals for 7DA is 17 million.
I found it interesting to see the similarities between those two churches and mormonism: restorationism, prophets, health codes, multinational congregations...all things that mormonism has trumpeted to the world. Things that mormons say make them unique and the doctrine true. Yet, even though these churches were founded after mormonism, they have exceeded mormonism's growth to date.
My exit from mormonism was very low key. I just told people that I didn't go to Church any more. Recently I've been more bold. I've told them I'm an apostate and ask if they want to join me in apostasy. Right now I feel like I should post the first two paragraphs of this on Facebook and let my family draw their own conclusions. Prediction: I will be unfriended by many.
