"Powerful, powerful writing! I can't help but wonder if the Elder in question is as much or more of a captive of the system as the writer of the letter. Think how much more he has to lose by his coming clean. Is their silence wrong? Maybe. Is it…"

Profile Information

Relationship Status (single, partner, etc):
widowed
My Story:
I AM: a 58 year old gay man, an orphan, twice widowed, a prostate cancer survivor, curious about the world, reasonably happy.
I HAVE: lost 140 lbs (ask me about gastric bypass surgery), created my own family from a host of friends, a 5 year old shia tzu named JAZZ.
I LIVE with 3 friends, 3 dogs, and 2 cats!
I AM: quite a seeker when it comes to spiritual things. I was born and raised LDS (Mormon) and served a two year mission (1969-1971) in Ireland of all places.
After returning home I was excommunicated when I came "out of the closet". "The Church" has little use for gays and lesbians. I made the acquaintance of a community of Benedictine (Catholic) Monks in Oceanside, California. In time I spent the better part of a year there as a Candidate for membership. In time I discovered that this was not where I wanted to be.
I moved to Tucson, Arizona (in 1978), attended college and worked some most unusual jobs (I managed an adult bookstore, worked for the university's rare book and manuscript department and was a volunteer manager at the Food Cooperative).
In 1983 I met and fell in love with Joseph Totten who was in town for a church conference. I moved to Hollywood on New Years Day, 1985. In May 1985 we registered as Domestic Partner #32 in West Hollywood and we hyphenated our names to produce Totten-Reid. We eventually moved to Santa Barbara, California and Baltimore, Maryland. He was a clergyman and educator with The Metropolitan Community Churches. He died10 years ago in December, 1988.
In 2000 I met, on line, my second partner. A delightful young man named Craig Junceau. He moved to Baltimore and was here until he was killed in a home accident in September, 2006.
Since then I have lived with a number of friends including the family I live with now.
So do you have any questions? Just ask away I'll probably answer.
Mike .
Interests and Hobbies:
I find all things religious & spiritual fascinating especially neo-paganism and Tibetan Buddhism..
In the past I've made jewelry, worked with stained glass & mosaics. Until last year I was making soap (Grandma was a pioneer). I am also a voracious reader.
Favorite Books:
Books by: Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist is partiularly good).
Books by Lama Surya Das & Thubten Chodron.
Sacred Paths for Modern Men by Dagonet Dewr
Favorite activity after mormonism?
I've lived more of my life as an EX-mormon than I did as a member. I don't want to sound too pretentious but living live freely is the best answer I can give.

Hey Mike-you're on here too! We need to start our own little ex-Mormon Curmudgeon Group here on the east Coast.

I introduced a writer's web site to my brother-in-law. The first piece he wrote was on the Constitution and gay marriage. He's currently in school (in addition to his full time day job), learning to be a paralegal. You might be interested in checking it out:

Thank you.

Are you very active in the fight against the churches over Prop 8? There are a few groups, from what I've read in the paper, that are trying to band together and get the vote overturned and let the Supreme Court ruling stand. I always thought that the Supreme Court had the final stay and the individual states and counties had to follow the rulings. So, Prop 8 was a double disappointment to me.

Mike Fairy Bear, I didn't think your photo was real until I read your profile. You look more like someone that stepped out of a middle-ages painting. That, sir, is a major compliment!

Welcome! And, I wish the church had a heart instead of just a vault in the mountainside where it keeps its wealth.

My half-brother is also gay. We've had many long talks on the subject since we got to know each other, and I think I understand a lot of the concerns that you live with on a daily basis. He has AIDS, diagnosed in 1987! Was a drug and alcohol addict, trying to escape from his life, until about 5 years ago. Since then, he's been unbearable! There's nothing worse than a reformed alcoholic especially when he's gone back into the M church. Mother, in effect, told him to be done with all his nonsense (drugs, alcohol and being gay) or she'd quit helping him. I'm sure she learned that from the church. Money rules.
