Rear View Mirror- Dana's Exit Story

Rear View MirrorWoulda, Coulda, Shoulda seem to be a pretty good mantra for my views into the past of being LDS. It all seems so surreal in the rearview mirror that now, eight years later it feels a…Continue

Profile Information

Relationship Status (single, partner, etc):
Very happily married to a nice mild mannered Unitarian who helps me feel whole and loved every day.
My Story:
Middle aged grandma of three (so far), mother of three living kids who somehow have all turned out ok in spite of my parenting mistakes. Artist of mediocre talent, writer of codswallop and mirth and a few occasional insightful pieces. I once had a great career as a residential designer where I designed well over 400 custom homes from the rebar in the foundation to the turtle vents on top. I miss my career very much but it's just gone, gone, gone. I'm trying to figure out what to do for the rest of my productive life and trying to find a job that doesn't humiliate me too much.
Interests and Hobbies:
Art, gardening, history, literature, grandkids, more gardening, more art, blogging, sharing fun times with competent friends, travel, more gardening, and watching Indy films.
Favorite Books:
I've read all of Molly Ivins stuff, Dave Barry, Garrison Keillor, Patrick McMannus, Jacob Isaacson, and many more. I am not a big fiction fan and definately not a sci-fi fan but if it's well written and has dynamic characters and keeps me engaged, I'll work through it. Reality is often far more bizarre than any fiction and I can relate to the stuff that real humans go through and feel invested in the real life characters. I get attached to an author and stay with their stuff because I love the cantor of their voice or writing and the charming colloquialisms. Mark Twain is the greatest author of all time in my book and I consider his work to be my bible. If I had to only take one book to prison after murdering a Republican (I didn't say Sarah Palin) I'd take my complete works of Mark Twain and study, quote, and disect every part of his writing, learn his voice, emulate his circular stories, and try like hell to have as much fun observing people as he did.
Favorite Movies:
All sorts of movies. I love the indy stuff and some real odd foreign films but good comedies and emotionally driven dramas stick with me best. I'm not much of an action adventure fan just because most of the plots are so predictable and once you've seen them once there's nothing new to discover. I love most of Johnny Depps stuff but I hated the recent version of Alice in Wonderland. I loathe the kind of drivel the LDS produce. Emotionally manipulative, trite, didactic, tripe. I can't believe they try to pass that stuff off as mainstream but will shun a movie like Chocolat or Don Juan De Marco for the subtle tasteful fun sexual content.
Favorite activity after mormonism?
travel. BABB and I have been to so many wonderful and interesting places in our five years together. If we had more money we'd go more often but as time and funds allow we try to see a new region of the country every year. Last year we traveled throughout New England in the fall and it fullfilled one of the best things on my bucket list. I'd go back to NYC in a heartbeat as well as anywhere in Vermont. I love the west but have lived here all my life. Seeing the great art, architecture, historical places (non-LDS) has been a wonderful enlightening experience. Maybe someday we'll get to go to Europe. If not, we always have Google Earth. We go on a lot of Google Earth dates and meet in St. Petersberg or other places and navigate our way around till it's almost like our own neighborhood.

Oh yeah, I once had a lovely career as a residential designer. It's dead beyond all resurrection, even if Jesus came back. really really dead. So I'm unemployed.

Hello Kate. I don't recall any exchange between us so this is one of those great fresh new relationships where I can pretend to be anyone I want and you can believe me till I prove otherwise. The short story on my status with the church. Out for a decade now. Divorced from first husband. Happily married to BABB (Bad Ass Brave Bill) and living part time in Vegas during the week where he has a good job and we go home to S. Utah to my little old pioneer farm on the weekends. My heart is in the country but my husband is here, so I'm here till we don't have to be anymore. I blog, I write on Postmormon (Dahli-mama) and a small forum called Exmormonforums.com,(Insanad) and I paint mediocre art pieces that sit in stacks in the closet till I foist them on some poor victim as a gift. I love my kids, grandkids, and gardening. I'm trying to write a book and hoping someday to publish it. How's that?
