I had a really hard time answering, not because of any fault in this questions but because I kind of left the church twice, in a way, and for 2 different reasons.
I first left because it just didn't make sense to me anymore and it just…"
Bar - what you said about your mother made me think of my grandfather.
Not long before he died my uncle shared with him the things that had caused him to leave the church.
While my grandpa was in the hospital he was discussing his…"
"I have always said to just live and let live (not to steal a James Bond quote there but I did anyway). It's because that's how I want other people to be with me. If they want to believe in God, then let them. They should let me choose not…"
"Meditation is a great way to clear my mind and just to relax. I've attended the UU a time or two. I enjoy the atmosphere. I find beauty in the Earth and the Universe and people. A beautiful sunset/sunrise, nature in general. So I agree, it…"
"Bar, I'm scratching my head as I read you posting no one has afforded you the courtesy you've afforded other religions. I had hoped I hadn't crossed a line and offended, but perhaps by the nature of the conversation, it just…"
"I find myself with a universalist set of beliefs, which is very inclusive and liberal. Prayer, for example, for me, can be reading a touching story or piece of poetry. It can be reading someone else's written prayer. It can be…"
"Polly, sounds like you are a rare exception to the usual! Very happy to hear that, as one person can make a difference. Alta does makes a very valid point, that can never be applied to everyone of course. Most things…"

"It's gotta be my oops. I don't remember checking atheist, but shit almighty, I must have! And no, I'm not looking to get all defensive and offended and spend my days thinking that way. One of my children is an…"
"Religion is the most divisive power that I know. It destroys families and friendships. A family that is not united in their core beliefs will never be truly close. So if you want to keep close trusting relationships with your family, and if you know…"
"Gofita, yes Atheist are found statistically among the most educated! This is not coincidence. Typically, meaning not always the case, Atheists truly have studied religions in the masses and concluded with concrete evidence, logic and reason…"
One big reason for me to at least make it known that I'm atheist is so that others who are afraid to come out as atheist -- or even to admit to themselves that they don't believe, will see that there are some other relatively normal people out there who feel the same way they do. Why do I sometimes want to poke holes in other people's beliefs? Well, between us I can say that it's painful to watch otherwise smart people continue believing ridiculous things -- I guess that's somewhat akin to the orange juice idea.
Hiya Blue_Spiral! I guess we can be "newbies" here on LAM together! :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts...you really get what I'm talking about and that's a HUGE relief to me! (and no need for typo corrections) Looking forward to getting to know you!! :)
