Laban's Murder Justified

Nephi killed Laban while he was passed out from over consumption of Alcohol in the fictional story of the Book of Mormon. Since an angel commanded it, was cold blooded murder justified, or just excused?

"Killed" Laban? That's putting it lightly.  He chopped off his head (getting no blood on his clothes).  Perhaps he stripped him bare first, and *then* chopped off his head.

I believe he was killed then stripped so that Nephi could walk around as Laban to return his family's property back to his father's land. I believe that his brothers were beaten and scorned while he was playing at Laban.

Which comes to another question, wasn't Laban a fat SoB portrayed in the book? If so, then how did Nephi, who was portrayed as a slender, but fit, young man, parade around as a fat man without a pillow?

I just read the part in the book "Under the Banner of Heaven", where Dan and Ron Laferty justified their murder of their sister-in-law and her baby with the BOM story of Nephi Killing Laban.

This is one of the aspects of the church that disturbs me deeply.  As a child I never actually thought about this story or the impact it could have on someone. Instead I took it a face value, even proudly singing the Primary song God Comanded Nephi to go and get the plates After all Nephi was glorified as one of the greatest prophets.

Its one example why my husband and I chose not to raise our children in the lds church it truly sickens me that this story is taught and glorified as much as it is in the church especially in the Primary.

But it accomplishes the real purpose of teaching and re-enforcing blind obedience as faith. It also teaches the end justifies the means.

How they justified murder in the under the banner of heaven is the truly horrific

Moses was told "Thou shalt not kill." (Exodus 20:13)  Later, the prophet Samuel gave King Saul the word of the Lord, Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." (1 Samuel 15:3)

Your not a pedophile if an angel of God commands you to marry underaged girls and other worthly men's wives. It's not theft if an angel of God tells you to start The Bank of Kirkland and you run off in the night as it goes under. It's not fraud if and angel of God tells you to restore Gods church (with all the different accounts) and translate the BofM and it's all phony.  Nothing to do with Laban, but everything to do with Joseph Smith and those pesky angels.
