Respect for Other's Beliefs- Realistic or Delusional?

Started by Nathan_The_Gay_Chef. Last reply by Edward Casey Jan 4. 11 Replies

The purpose of this thread is to find out what it really means to have "respect for other's beliefs," because I am not convinced that many Atheists do, nor should they feel obligated to. My take on…Continue

Evolution misconceptions that makes us facepalm

I'm new to this group but I thought that I'd start a discussion about something that seems to come up rather regularly. And that of course is evolution. The thing that seems to come up so often with…Continue

I used to be agnostic, but then my balls dropped.

I remember hearing that song "Dear God" for the first time. I was delivering my paper route before going to seminary, and I had to stop the car and cry for a bit to let out the frustration after the last line "If there's one thing I can't believe in, it's you!" How's that for an honest prayer, eh? It's not easy being born into a belief system that doesn't end up working for you.

I think myths and legends have alot of psychological truths about the human condition. Of course, they must be read in their historical context with an ear to the metaphorical.

Religion is what happens when people mistake metaphorical hyperbole for historical "fact".

I love the legends and myths, but that's all they are. I think I was about 4 when I realized "god" wasn't going to save me from the horrible life I suffered. I spent years trying to figure out what I did to anger him so bad to allow my torture. Then I realized he wasn't there and I haven't done anything wrong. Dear god song kind of brought it home for me.

I believe with all my heart that there is no god. Nevertheless, I revel in the mythology of all the lesser "gods" that humans play with in their heads.

Belief in the supernatural shows a lack of imagination.

I also do not think there is an "Historical Jesus" due to the very VAST lack of evidence and the tampering of evidence to prove he even existed. His story is just a re-tell of Horus and Isis, Hera and Zeus, Krishna, etc. etc. etc.

I consider myself anti-theist or possibly "apethetheist" as Penn Teller coined the term... or something like that. I really don't give a shit if there is a god, especially the ones from the Middle East.
