I am here looking for a positive community of Christian exmormons. Unfortunately the rest of my family is still LDS, its hard to discuss Christian related things. And it was precisely the study of the beliefs and practices of early Christianity that led me, like many others, to the Catholic faith (or Eastern Orthodoxy).

Bingo!  The grace issue is brought up.  It took me ten years to actually get that.  When you are raised in an opposite manner, it just doesn't make sense.  Once I actually got that, my life became much more peaceful and generous.

If you find peace within the walls of a Catholic church, then by all means, go for it.  Far beit for me to get involved.  I just hated what Rome did with the original tenets of Christianity.  It doesn't mean you cannot find what  you are looking for, if that's your goal, and if you feel spiritual there.

Since I can't resist, as far as the comments on the Catholic Church goes the first three are consistent with the history of Christianity. Communion was always denied to those who did not profess the same faith – that’s how heretics were identified and excluded from the body of the church. Birth control was condemned by every Christian denomination before the twentieth century - the Catholics have resisted the morals of our age (we could add divorce to that as well). That some were called to celibacy was taught by Jesus, Paul, and the early Church. It became mandatory for the clergy over time in the Western rite (although there are some married Catholic priests and the rule could be changed), and in any case clergy were always forbidden to contract a new marriage after ordination. The last comment on personal study is not true, although unfortunately most Catholics today seem to be not particularly well informed on their faith or the Bible. The real issue is with the interpretation of the Bible, in Catholicism it is not a free for all where everyone’s opinion is equally authoritative.

Not so lonely... :-)  It wasn't so much an interest in Christianity as a religion that pulled me in to Christianity, but the personal relationship I already had with the Holy Spirit and to some extent Christ as a Mormon.  Once I took the leap of faith and experienced the grace of Christ that had so long been hidden from me as Mormon there was no turning back.  I stand more firmly with Christ now than at any point when I was LDS.

Luckily for me, my parents were converts so our extended family was Protestant.  I think because of this I had a quite different opinion of the various Protestant denominations than most Mormons.  I mean, all of my family believed in Christ and I went to church with them a few times and it all seemed okay.  Growing up in Alabama surrounded by Baptists, Church of Christs, Methodists, etc. helped, too.

I'd recommend you try out a United Methodist congregation.  Depending on the congregation you'll find either a "high church" Catholic-like service or a "low church" more Evangelical service.  United Methodist are pretty open theologically and people in my congregation worship in harmony though we have varying different theological perspectives (Calvinism, Armenianism, Universalism, etc.)

I like pollypinks find open communion and encouragement of personal Christian study to be important issues when searching for a body to worship with.

<sigh> I had a feeling that the 'Catholic' thing would elicit some comments. I'm not really interested in getting into the Protestant vs. Catholic debate here, although if someone really wants to know why, with a great deal of study and prayer, I am considering Catholicism, I would be happy to share.

Yes, I am a lonely Christian here.  I feel there is no need to be saved from anything.  And attending a church that denies communal communion, birth control, marriage within the pulpit, and personal study aside from the body isn't really much different than mormonism, in my humble opinion.

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site and consider myself a believer in Christianity, but have not formally joined any particular church yet (l am leaning towards Catholicism though).

I'm wondering what kept people here interested in Christianity, since so many exMormons seem to abandon belief all together? How many of you had some experience in other Christian traditions before leaving Mormonism? For how many was the study of historical Christianity part of the reason why you left the LDS church?

Infallible or inerrant is a semantics game that's laughable.  Never failing, which is rather easy to disprove, or, doing no wrong.  I could play this game for years, but a major point of mine is that fundamentalists don't really want to know core truth.  They want the emotionalism of somebody telling them they have to be saved in order to avoid hell.  They want to be BETTER than others, because somebody with limited knowledge of Bible matters tells them they are ready for the rapture.  They need that reassurance that comes with functioning just as mormons do.  With somebody else feeding them spoonfuls of truth so they can feel they've got it made.
