Agnostics/Ignostics

Information

Agnostics/Ignostics

A group existed just for Atheists, and one can be both an agnostic and an atheist. However I thought it would be nice to have a group just for the Agnostics/Ignostics.  Agnostic-atheists are free to join here too, as are deists, pandeists, etc.

I mostly just tell them the truth, that is if they are interested at all.  Most of the time they could care less about God or church.  A book worth looking into, of which I have not finished reading myself, is "Parenting Beyond Belief".

Question?  Those of you with children - How do approach your beliefs or non-beliefs when discussing them with your kids?

Welcome Vryhppynw!  Always nice to find kindred people to mingle with.

Hi Everyone,

Finally getting around to investigating the Groups.  This ones seems to be the best fit.  (I changed my user name today for privacy issues I was Beth before)  My beliefs are exactly as MikeUtah.  Also, find it all very interesting to contemplate, but don't let it affect my life and how I live at all.  Looking foward to some great conversations.

Hello ya'll!  I consider myself a pandeist:

Pandeism combines the major elements of deism and pantheism, and holds that a transcendent God existed before the universe was created, but that this God became the universe in the course of creating it, and thereby ceased to be an active participant in its operations.

To the theists out there, Deism and Pandeism is about the same as atheism or agnosticism.  I freely admit that I just don't know, but from the theories on God out there, deism/pandeism makes the most sense to me.  In some cases, I am an atheist/agnostic but still believe in an afterlife/immortality, and feel that reincarnation may also be at play in our existence if the former is true.  Some friends of mine invented the word "Postmortentialist" to describe that predicament.  Nice to be a part of the group.

My husband likes to call himself a Mechanist. I guess that's because he likes to take things apart and figure out how they work and if he can make improvements.

Interesting.  There are a lot of "cism"s out there.  I like the idea of Ignosticism.  I've noticed that since being burned by the Mormon cult, I fear grouping myself into any religious definition.

I know that I do not know....agnosticism.

But what about Ignosticism?

Ignosticism, or igtheism, is the theological position that every other theological position (includingagnosticism) assumes too much about the concept of God and many other theological concepts. The word "ignosticism" was coined by Sherwin Wine, a rabbi and a founding figure in Humanistic Judaism.

It can be defined as encompassing two related views about the existence of God:

  1. The view that a coherent definition of God must be presented before the question of the existence of god can be meaningfully discussed. Furthermore, if that definition is unfalsifiable, the ignostic takes the theological noncognitivist position that the question of the existence of God (per that definition) is meaningless. In this case, the concept of God is not considered meaningless; the term "God" is considered meaningless.
  2. The second view is synonymous with theological noncognitivism, and skips the step of first asking "What is meant by 'God'?" before proclaiming the original question "Does God exist?" as meaningless.

Some philosophers have seen ignosticism as a variation of agnosticism or atheism,[1] while others have considered it to be distinct. An ignostic maintains that they cannot even say whether he/she is a theist or an atheist until a sufficient definition of theism is put forth.
