I am asking because I want to give members a real argument who say that people that leave the church weren't really active and devout members and just were looking for a way out.

Just state...

  • What callings/priesthoods you've had
  • Whether or not you served a mission
  • Any other interesting services you've done for the church.

I have served in the Aaronic Priesthood as a priest, teacher, and the deacon's quorum.  I was 1st and 2nd counselor of the Deacon's Quorum.

I did not serve a mission.

I also did home teaching, collected fast offerings, and volunteered once at the Johnson farm.

My history sucks I know...

What's yours?

The Witnesses can't stand even civil confrontation.  They love to drag their bibles out, so I drag mine out as well.  Today the topic I wouldn't leave alone was the blood thing.  Paul says in Acts not to ingest anything unclean, blah blah blah.  So I say, "Since you like Paul's literalism so much, let's go to Galatians where he tells the women not to cut their hair.  Let's move around a little in the bible and find where they can't braid their hair, and cannot wear jewelry.  Let's talk about what he meant when telling them they couldn't teach, or preach.  And let's talk about what you do to your own members who actually have other religious material in their homes, that they might be studying.  Because, they disfellowship or shun those people.  And what do they do if you have a blood transfusion?  Well, it's the same.  So I tell them I hate legalism, and I've got just as much universalist scripture to back me up as they've got their scripture, and I know the story of the man who started their religion.  Goodness, she says, hasn't time gotten away from me.  I really have to leave.
Coming out of the morg as a good LDS woman, it took years for me to be totally honest with myself and others.  Mostly with myself.  When we're raised to think only of the organization and others, it's hard to know who we really are.  I've gotten my voice, and I refuse to put it back down in that dark hole where nobody really talks about anything substantive.
