I'm a stage manager of a play called Messiah on the Frigidaire, and one of the lines that gave me prophecy of what was going to happen of why I couldn't leave Mormonism until everything all fell apart one by one until there was nothing left of me in it. Here is the line....
If you go messing with someone's belief system one of two things will happen.... they'll get angry or they'll laugh at you.
(I'm kidding about the prophecy part, but it is definitely coincidentally mysterious)

When you said that "one of two things will happen" is what is called a false dichotomy or a false dilemma. There are of course many other alternatives that could occur. Examine this article and then let's discuss it and see if you view it differently.
It's not surprising that it takes time to view things differently than from the view we had with the mormon goggles. It took years and years of indoctrination and conditioning...(ie. Line upon line, precept upon precept) to develop the mormon beliefs. It should come as no surprise then that it takes time to dismantle those deep held beliefs one by one until we are enabled to regain our freedom and ability to think for ourselves.

The image of Jesus appears on a fridge in a trailer park after someone in the neighborhood played a prank cutting a bunch of red tip bushes into the shape of Walt Disney characters and the street light reflects off the bushes and makes an image of Jesus.
The line came from where the husband of a very devout baptist had his own theory on religion. He noticed that the theory of evolution had some major holes in it because some monkeys evolved into humans where others would just stay monkeys. His theory was that a bunch of aliens were alone and depressed traveling thousands of miles on a space ship, that they came to earth and impregnated a bunch of monkeys. The super alien genes allowed humans to develop. A couple thousand years ago the aliens came back and impregnated Mary, which caused Jesus to get a double dose of the alien genes being able to perform a bunch of miracles through his alien powers. After the aliens monitored his progress and felt really guilty, they beamed him up and took him back with them. His ascension into heaven.
