The LDS church has a long standing practice of manipulating facts to suit their point of view and to create a appealing public image. You can read my essay for an introduction to that practice. I don't think most Mormons do this, but when leadership deems that the ends justify the means, the do it in spades. Mitt Romney served both as an LDS Bishop and Stake President which puts him in the category of leadership lying for the lord when the end justifies the means. For more info on this practice in the LDS church, please watch this YouTube series presented by Ken Clark, a former LDS CES (church education system) instructor, given at the 2008 Exmormon Foundation Conference in Salt Lake City Utah.
