My song was Katy Perry's "Wide Awake"
The lyrics just struck my heart one morning. The night before I had come to realize that the church had deceived me into faithfulness. I got in my truck and drove to work with solemn thoughts. I decided to switch the radio on and I heard a song that was just perfect to help me feel better and more positive.
Just imagine how this song touched my heart as you realize I was deeply depressed. I hope it touches yours too.
The lyrics are:
"Wide Awake"
....I'm wide awake

Permalink Reply by MikeUtah on October 8, 2012 at 12:46pm Here's mine, which has continued to stick with me since I first left and continues to be a theme song for my life. The song is "Affirmation" by Savage Garden:
I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe that your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I believe that God does not endorse TV evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
Permalink Reply by Nicholas on October 8, 2012 at 8:37pm The song that helped me realize the problems with the Christian, and subsequently Mormon god is "Dear God" by XTC. It made a lot of sense to me then and it still does.
Dear god hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image, see
Them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
Enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you
Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
Loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
In the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you
Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
Mankind after we made you? And the devil too!
, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
A lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
Should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
Image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
So do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe in
I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
Devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
Letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
Drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
Whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
And if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
My sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in
It's you....
Permalink Reply by Sari on October 9, 2012 at 7:57am I LOVE Katy Perry's Wide Awake. I immediately took to that song when it came out.
I have dozens of songs that are therapeutic for me but my all time favorite is Don Henley's "End of the Innocence".
Fantastic song, written by Bruce Hornsby, which makes it more fantastic. Amazing lyrics and phenomenal message.
Permalink Reply by David Boehrer on October 9, 2012 at 6:49pm This is a great topic. I have always been half out of the church but when my wife came to me and decided she was out. (I jumped up and down with happiness) I remember a song by OAR came out and was very fitting for the time. The song was "Heaven" and the line I remember is "I Don't want to go to heaven if I cant get in". I remember thinking to myself. That is so true. If they don't want me for who I am, then I don't want to be there.
I can think of one more song that I remember made me think. It was a line in Jay-Z's version of forever young "Life is for living, not living up tight". I remember thinking how liberating it was to know that I was just living my life by my rules and it was not so uptight.
That is my 2 cents. Thanks for listening.

The paranoia is in bloom, the PR
Transmissions will resume, they'll try to
Push drugs, keep us all dumb down and hope that
We will never see the truth around, so come on
Another promise, another scene, another
Package not to keep us trapped in greed with all the
Green belts wrapped around our minds and endless
Red tape to keep the truth confined, so come on
They will not force us
And they will stop degrading us
And they will not control us
We will be victorious, so come on
Interchanging mind control, come let the
Revolution take its toll, if you could
Flick a switch and open your third eye, you'd see that
We should never be afraid to die, so come on
Rise up and take the power back, it's time that
The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that
Their time is coming to an end, we have to
Unify and watch our flag ascend, so come on
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious, so come on
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious, so come on
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Permalink Reply by loveslabourslost on October 12, 2012 at 6:25pm I have a couple of songs to share.
One of them is kind of - like Micah's - something that has helped me dictate my new belief system. That one is "Oxygen" by Willi Mason.
There are also two songs by a little-known artist by the name of Cavalier King. The Unprotected really spoke to me - years before I even left the church. The other is titled Renegade - This one is practically impossible to find. I usually listen to it on spotify. Here are the lyrics for Renegade:
So it came out one day that I don't pray to virgin mothers
and I have no faith in a supernatural martyr.
So now that you know, don't you wonder how I keep myself
from going quite insane?
Don't fool around, this is not for children.
Don't fool around 'cause it's not a game.
Oh, I wield this golden shield
and I sling these silver arrows
for I will never yield
to the fancy of the Pharaohs.
And as we lay our heads
and we gaze upon the stars,
you're thinking that this is so insane.
Don't fool around, this is not for children.
Don't fool around, this is not for children.
Don't fool around with a renegade....
like me.
So I cannot heal the blind,
and I cannot walk on water.
But the world before my mind
is a stone before the sculptor.
So if you looks for signs
that the universe has clear intentions, well -
you will go insane.
Don't fool around, this is not for children.
Don't fool around, this is not for children.
Don't fool around with a renegade
like me...
Oh, like me.

Permalink Reply by rebornhawaiian on October 16, 2012 at 9:49pm This was the song that got me started thinking about my life in general. My wife's song was katy perrys Wide awake. I also like OAR's Heaven.
Some Nights by FUN
Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights, I call it a draw
Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off
But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for oh
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know anymore...
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa oh oh
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa oh oh
This is it, boys, this is war - what are we waiting for?
Why don't we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype - save that for the black and white
I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style
And that's alright; I found a martyr in my bed tonight
She stops my bones from wondering just who I am, who I am, who I am
Oh, who am I? mmm... mmm...
Well, some nights, I wish that this all would end
Cause I could use some friends for a change
And some nights, I'm scared you'll forget me again
Some nights, I always win, I always win...
But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know... (come on)
So this is it? I sold my soul for this?
Washed my hands of that for this?
I miss my mom and dad for this?
(Come on)
No. When I see stars, when I see, when I see stars, that's all they are
When I hear songs, they sound like this one, so come on
Oh, come on. Oh, come on, OH COME ON!
Well, that is it guys, that is all - five minutes in and I'm bored again
Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anybody understands
This one is not for the folks at home; Sorry to leave, mom, I had to go
Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?
My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she call "love"
When I look into my nephew's eyes...
Man, you wouldn't believe the most amazing things that can come from...
Some terrible lies...ahhh...
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh
The other night, you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me
I called you up, but we'd both agree
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance... oh...
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance... oh...
