What made me question the doctrines and beliefs of the LDS church was its exclusion of good people. I noticed as a kid several honest, generous people were shunned as evil. Even to my young mind it seemed obvious something was awry.

Empathy for all mankind is what gives me that feeling that we were taught is the "holy spirit". Apparently, neuroscientists and evolutionary biologists think they know why we feel that way and where in the brain it is triggered.
