I'm interested in hearing the number one reason why everyone left the mormon church. What was the final straw that broke the camels back for you? Please be specific. I realize for most it's for various reasons, but if you could narrow it down to one or two reasons I'd really be interested in hearing about it. Was it a certain doctrine taught? Was it something from the history? Was it the way it made you feel? Did you have some kind of spiritual experience or vision telling you to leave? etc. etc. Please share. Thanks

Permalink Reply by grittypretty on February 13, 2012 at 12:04am Hello, The last straw for me was reading diary excerpts from one of joseph's plural wives- she was 16, recently orphaned and joseph was threatening her that if she didn't marry him the gates of heaven would be forever closed against her. she refused his advances twice. in her diary she wrote if only her parents were still alive to help her...after the third marriage proposal from a very insistent joseph she stayed up all night praying and finally said yes. i suspect she had a mental collapse. it broke my heart. yes, i cried for three days when i found out about polygamy, yes, it was only getting more bizarre with the polyandry front husband stuff but coercing an orphaned teenager just made lose all respect for joseph! by the way, the diary excerpts were included in some old book at the provo library that was meant to be faith-promoting! i should find that title again...and i found out about polyandry from my BYU mormon history professor who had authored the text- he told us that the brethren in charge of oversight wouldn't allow him to include certain info but that he was going to go ahead and tell our class the truth as he knew it!

Permalink Reply by Pandoragold on February 14, 2012 at 3:14am Hi, I have never seen occult symbols on/in the temples. What have I mised please?
Permalink Reply by Enlightened on Saturday just Google "occult symbols on/in mormon temples" - you will be spoilt for choice as to what to read.
Enjoy!
Permalink Reply by Bahai_Faith on Saturday so what is wrong with the "occult"? It is the Cross that had killed more, burned more alive, raped more, millions upon millions. The "Cross" is one of the bloodiest symbols in history. More have been mrudered, raped, burned alive, in defense of "Christianity" than any other religion. The Cross is the most satanic, evil, symbol of violence and ignorance I know of. The occult symbols are symbols of enlightenment, and science, and wisdom.
Permalink Reply by BlueEyesBrittany on Saturday I find your comment highly insulting ......
I converted to mormonism from catholicism.... was raised as a catholic ... .and, though i find the inquisition and some other parts of the catholic history awful, i can assure you that the values that i was taught from my catholic upbringing were valuable ones like committed monogamous marriage, respect of others including one's spouse and children ... not the kind you depict in your comment.
By the way, if you look at the history of all religions you should realise how much women have been in abused in their names and that killings have been all part of them.
The catholicism i know is at the opposite of what you say ..... and it allows redemption through non violent means.
Permalink Reply by Bahai_Faith on Saturday I find your comments highly ignorant.
The Inquisition was just one small part of the blood shed in the name of the Cross, by Catholic and Protestant alike. For example, the other 30,000 women burned alive for being witches by the Church of English. I never said that there were not good Catholics, or that the Catholic church does not have some good teachings. You falsely assume (a typical Mormon trait by the way). I said that the Cross is a symbol of murder and ignorance and hate, much more than any "occult" symbol! If diplaying an "occult symbol" makes one evil, displaying a Cross makes one a MILLION TIMES MORE evil, because a million times more evil was done in the name of the Cross than any occult symbol.
Permalink Reply by BlueEyesBrittany on Saturday I was a catholic who converted to mormonism but i never was active in the mormon church. But you know what i think your comments go too far .....
And since you are not a catholic, maybe you dont know what they teach ..... well i was once and it think it is a great religion .... and the last thing it teaches is killing ... quite the opposite .... which does not mean that in times of war we dont have the right to defend ourselves.
So your comments are just outrageous and I am proud of my original faith whether you like or not
Permalink Reply by Bahai_Faith on Saturday Dear Blue Eyes,
I am very familiar with what the Catholic Church teaches, and with Catholic history. Many times during the history of the Catholic Church, "heretics" were killed, burned at the stake in most cases. You have other cases like the Albiginsians, who were considered to be heretics. They were non-violent. To escape death, they hid in a town containing Catholics. The Catholic townspeople refused to give up the "heretics" because they knew their fate. The military commander asked what should be done. The Catholic papal legate said: "Kill them all, let God sort them out!" This was done. The town was raised. The women raped. Then the men, women, and children burned alive while crowded in wooden houses. Also, you have the Crusades, where there Popes said it was a holy duty to kill heretics and infidels, with forgiveness of personal sins in return. There are many, many more examples. Not just Catholic, but Protestants as well, who murdered hundreds of thousands of Anabaptists over the centuries. But THE POINT of my original post was this.....that "occultic symbols" on Mormon Temples doesn't make Mormonism "evil". The most "evil" symbol used by mankind has been the Cross; more innocent blood has been shed in the name of the Cross, than by any so-called "occultic" symbol. That was my point.
Permalink Reply by BlueEyesBrittany on Sunday I am not going to call you Dear Bahai Faith,
Because i dont think you are a dear person....
I just think you are after the catholics ....... because being raised as a catholic meant having good values and not what you are describing above ...
You are just biased ..... and the people you are describing are not representative of all christianity ....
And if you look at history see how many people have killed on all sides of the religious spectrum ...
I was proud to be a catholic and, as a matter of fact, i may return to that faith rather than anything else because of all the good values it had.
And i will never reply to you again on this subject because i think your purpose is to highlight the bad in the catholic church and ignore all the good that it has done in people's life and is still doing.
You may hold your position but i hold mine and will never change from it .
I dont know what your agenda is ... but it obviously is not a fair one.
This is my last word on it ... and truly end of the discussion.
Once again i want to let you know that i am proud of my mainstream christianity faith and i know it is a great faith with very good values. You are misrepresenting the values it supports and only highlighting the bad parts of it ..
This is the last time i take part on this board
Permalink Reply by mark/norcal out on February 13, 2012 at 6:16pm I had the bright idea of learning more about church history. After researching the Book of Abraham, I was done.
I've noticed that quite a bit. A fellow member's faith is floundering after learning certain things about the church. A good friend is going to help them out and in the process of researching the issue comes to find out the truth for themselves too. For myself, I had never really looked into the questionable issues because I "knew" the church was true. I didn't need to waste my time. But then one day I decided to research these issues. I "knew" I would find the church to be true. Boy was I wrong!!! Here's a great quote from my wife's fb page. "Don't believe everything you think."
