Event Description

It's time to send you the first "official" announcement about the next Exmormon Foundation Conference! As in the past few years, the conference will be held at The Embassy Suites in Salt Lake City -- and the dates will be October 15--17, 2010. We should have all the registration information up on our website in a few weeks and I will let you know when it's up for view. We are working on a whole new system wherein you will be able to register, pay, and send the information we need all online! You can, however start making reservations for the hotel. Call 801.359.7800, and ask for the reservation clerk, then ask for the Exmormon Foundation rate. Last year we filled up the entire block of 70 rooms several weeks before the Conference, so book early.

I am very excited about the program this year, and want to give you some of the highlights. Following are some of the speakers who are committed at this point:

Jeff Sharlet - contributing editor for Harper's and Rolling Stone whose work has also appeared in The Washington Post, Mother Jones, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Columbia Journalism Reiview, Oxford American, and New Statesman. He is the author of a fascinating book, "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power", which he has discussed on the Rachel Maddow show on several occasions. If you've heard about the "C Street House" and the very elusive Christian cult that owns the house where many U.S. Congressmen and Senators have lived over the years, Jeff is the one who ha illuminated the history of this organization and its frightening influence on our government. It's a fascinating book, and as I read the about obvious conflicts between church and state, I thought about how those lines are so often blurred in most of Utah - and in ways suspected but not totally clear, the influence of the church in many of our government agencies. See here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Sharlet and http://tinyurl.com/2aappss . Jeff's book speaks only about this one strange cult, and in no way maligns any other Christian religion. I think you will find his presentation extremely interesting.

Jim Whitefield, who is coming from England. Author of the 3-Volume "The Mormon Delusion", Jim joined the church as a teenager, and remained a faithful and involved Mormon for 43 years -- serving a mission, and various Ward, Stake and Regional callings. In 2003, Jim resigned from the church. It wasn't until 3 years later that he stumbled on an interesting 100-year-old-pamphlet by Joseph F. Smith, which contained affidavits of several of Joseph Smith's wives. This began an intense and scholarly search for more information about Polygamy and Polyandry -- which eventually ended in the publication of his trilogy.

Pamela McCreary - award-winning author, editor, actor, public speaker and television producer. In her memoir "Dancing On The Head Of A Pin", Pamela tells the truth, all the truth, and nothing but the truth about her "one-step forward, one-step back" journey away from the Mormon church and toward her real self. Through it all, she learned how to fight those old victim feelings which are familiar to so many of us and will share what she's learned about putting things behind us.

Tal Bachman - a man of many talents: award-winning musician, song writer, essayist, with a BA in Political Science. Most ex-Mormons who haunt the Internet know who Tal is, and have read many of his musings -- for a couple of years all about the church as he worked his way through the angst that afflicts all of us after discovering the truth about Mormonism. More recently he comments on a smorgasbord of subjects. Tal will be our dinner speaker at the Saturday-night banquet.

Dennis Lavery - a second chance for those who weren't at the 2009 conference to see the documentary "In the Shadow of the Temple". Dennis will also talk about some of the great experiences he's had this past year in his travels around the country to show the film.

And more!!

Once again, I look forward to meeting all the first-timers, and shmoozing with the "old-timers" also.

There will be more information later. Feel free to write me with any questions.

Does a person need to stay at the hotel if they attend the conference?
Comment by MikeUtah on August 27, 2010 at 11:05am
No Mindy. You can come from home, or even another hotel/motel/inn.

I'm staying at Micah's house, but he doesn't know that yet. I have two Golden Retrievers with weak bowels and no bladder control. They love kids and couch cushions.

Jenny, at that hotel rate you also get a full breakfast for each guest staying in your room. To that would be two breakfasts with the room and each other guest you pay extra for, gets breakfast too.
That is a really good deal!

Next point. Michelle and I will be delivering the temple wedding petition to COB at 3:30pm on Friday the 15th Oct. Meeting at COB; if anyone would like to join us for a peaceful handing over of the petition please join us there. No placards or shouting, but singing is a nice idea. Does anyone have an idea for an appropriate song?
